The FLENI Foundation has acquired a completely new neurosurgery radiation machine: the Gamma Knife Perfexion, the only technology of its kind in the country for brain pathology surgery. We were at the presentation of this new piece of equipment at the headquarters of FLENI of Belgrano with the medical team and the community which provided support for this initiative.

The President of the FLENI Foundation, Dr Fernando Carcavallo, emphasized the quality of FLENI’s leadership in innovation and its groundbreaking use of new technologies. The Foundation acquired a Gamma Knife machine in 2000, and has so far undertaken 2500 procedures in different pathologies which avoid having to open the skull. Aware of the importance of this technique in the country, the Fleni has worked hard to constantly update its equipment and has now incorporated the latest version of the Gamma Knife, called Perfexion. This machine delivers with great precision the optimal dose of radiation required to undertake the procedure. The advantages of the new equipment are that «the time of the intervention is reduced and one can be more specific in the treatment of the selected area with a minimum effect on normal tissue,» explained Dr. Julio Antico, Head of the Gamma Knife Department.

The keynote speaker at the inauguration the Ambassador of Sweden in Argentina, Ms. Gufran Al-Nadaf, who highlighted the Swedish origins of this technology. Representing Panedile, which sponsors the solidarity programs at the FLENI Foundation, were Ms. Lucía Dragonetti and Mr. Francisco Cao.
